Thirty years after it seceded from Somalia, the self-declared Republic of Somaliland enjoys a stable and largely democratic system of politics and a level of peace and stability that sits in stark contrast to its neighbors in the Horn of Africa. International recognition, however, despite the best efforts of successive governments, has so far been elusive.
