At Onero's “Research Experts Panel”, GW hosted Donatienne Ruy, the Director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Leadership Academy and Executive Education Portfolio and fellow for the CSIS’ Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program, and Dr. Sadeq Hasan, a diplomat and political analyst at the Iraqi Embassy in Washington, DC. During the moderated portion of the panel, the two answered questions on what drew them to research and their specific fields of study, their career progression, the nuances of researching international affairs and encompassing a full-picture story in their work and recommendations, the impacts of their research, consequences of recent changes in funding, and the use of Artificial Intelligence in the research arena. Ruy and Hasan also gave advice to students pursuing research, emphasizing the importance of reading, diversifying sources of information, and learning from and/or interacting with those from the region of study. Both guests also encouraged students to expand their critical analysis and skillsets. During the open Q&A session, burnout, primary sources, the differences between think-tank and embassy research, and the discrediting of studies because of unexpected world events were discussed.
